Failed Pressure-Test Investigations
Focused assessment of suspected leaks on newly installed water mains.

Before you waste thousands on unnecessary excavation, call The Leak Geeks. Help your crew narrow down suspected underground leaks before committing more labor, machinery and project time to exploratory digging.
When a newly installed water main fails its pressure test, digging bell-to-bell can consume valuable time and resources. We evaluate the main and testing conditions, then select suitable diagnostic methods to help identify suspected leak areas before excavation. Acoustic correlation requires a detectable leak signal. We review the test setup and site conditions before selecting a method.

Two-sensor acoustic correlation may help estimate a leak location between accessible fittings when an adequate leak-noise signal exists. Other investigations can be assessed without operating pressure.

We focus initially on 6-inch, 8-inch and 16-inch ductile iron water mains, including approximately 500-foot test sections with accessible hydrants or valves.
We review pressure-test conditions, pipe details and access points, then confirm suitable equipment and scheduling for each job. Findings identify suspected leak locations, not guaranteed exact points.

The rates below are preliminary starting prices for water-main investigations, not guaranteed fixed quotes. Final pricing is subject to change based on each job's access, equipment, pipe material, length, number of test sections, location, mobilization, urgency and complexity. Sewer investigations are quoted individually.
Important: Each separately isolated section may require its own assessment. Multiple leak locations, restricted access, retesting, extra site visits and specialized rentals may increase costs. Pricing does not include excavation or pipe repair. Leak location and avoided excavation costs cannot be guaranteed.

Published utility bids show how quickly underground construction costs accumulate. A 2024 South Granville Water and Sewer Authority bid tabulation lists 16-inch ductile-iron force-main open-cut installation at $300–$447 per linear foot. Those figures are for installation work, not a price quote for locating or repairing a single leak. Actual excavation and repair costs vary widely with soil, depth, road surfaces, shoring, access, fittings, labor and restoration.
South Carolina's Greenville Water 2025 Starsdale project bid form separately identifies costs for ductile-iron main work, rock excavation, pavement replacement, and related work. These categories show why exploratory excavation can be disruptive, but do not establish a universal per-foot repair price.
